Biography

Organist, Harpsichordist,
Choir and Orchestra Conductor.

Mario Ciferri trained at the Conservatories of Bologna, Pesaro and Rome, earning six diplomas: Piano, Organ and Organ Composition, Harpsichord, Orchestral Conducting and Sacred Music, the latter cum laude.

He completed his studies in composition, harmony, counterpoint and fugue, and graduated in Orchestral Conducting at the Academy of Advanced Training in Pescara under Donato Renzetti.

He pursues an intense concert career in Italy and abroad, with more than eight hundred concerts in over twenty countries. He has performed in the most important cathedrals and halls of Europe and America: St Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and Temple Church in London, Lincoln, Rochester, Edinburgh; St Patrick’s Cathedral and the Central Synagogue in New York; Reykjavík Cathedral, St Florian Abbey, the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic, Sochi and Katowice; and also Paris, Bordeaux, Lyon, Munich, Warsaw, Copenhagen, Oslo, Moscow, Minsk, Toronto. At the Sochi Philharmonic and at Katowice he performed as soloist the Concerto for organ and orchestra op. 100 by Marco Enrico Bossi.

His vast organ repertoire ranges from Frescobaldi, Buxtehude, Bach and Mendelssohn to the French and German symphonic tradition of Franck, Widor, Vierne, Liszt, Reubke, Reger, Karg-Elert, reaching the twentieth century of Dupré, Duruflé and Messiaen. He has given modern-era premières of long-unpublished composers, some of which were recorded for the first time.

He has collaborated as a continuo player (harpsichord and organ) with orchestras such as I Virtuosi di Bucarest, the Orchestra Internazionale d’Italia, the Orchestra da Camera delle Marche and the Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana.

As a conductor he has led Baroque ensembles and orchestral and choral groups in the great works of Bach, Handel, Charpentier, Mozart, Vivaldi, Pergolesi, Galuppi, Giordani, Fauré and Saint-Saëns. In 2006 he prepared and conducted the A.R.CO.M Regional Choir in performances of music by Britten and Mozart’s Requiem K. 626. Among other venues, the Teatro alle Muse in Ancona.

He holds the chair of Organ Practice and Gregorian Chant at the «G. B. Pergolesi» State Conservatory in Fermo, is titular organist of the church of San Giorgio Martire in Porto San Giorgio and, since 2007, founder and artistic director of the «Città di Porto San Giorgio» International Organ Festival.

The Festival

Organ Festival
«Città di Porto San Giorgio»

Founded in 2007 by Mario Ciferri, the Festival brings Italian and foreign organists to Porto San Giorgio every year, around the Francesco Zanin organ (1966) of the church of San Giorgio Martire. Concerts are free of charge, thanks to the support of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Fermo.

Mario Ciferri has been its founder and artistic director since the first edition.
